Harvard Design School Offering Integrated Project Management Course

Project Management is a core skill for every successful architect, planner, consultant, contractor, or project owner. Projects need to be delivered on time, within budget, and at a high quality standard. Integrated Project Management (IPM) is the latest, state-of-the-art definition of the industry.

The IPM Harvard Executive Education intense two-day seminar will address the need for a broader, holistic, effective, and efficient leadership to manage resources, teams of Architects & Contractors and budgetary constraints, together with innovation in software and collaborative technology. In today’s competitive and recessionary environment, creating success requires a comprehensive approach that incorporates IPD, LEAN, CM, Design -Build and other delivery methods concepts into practice.

Rooted in Place: Citizen Architect Documentary Chronicles Samuel Mockbee, FAIA, and the Rural Studio

Of all the accumulated, Deep South homespun wisdom Samuel Mockbee, FAIA, ever taught his students or contemporaries, perhaps the most important was this: “If it has moral merit, it deserves the title ‘architecture.’”

These words, spoken to Architectural Record in 2001, could be misconstrued as a toothless, idealized cliché until one truly examines the plain reality of most building done every day. Then it’s understood as a declaration (which could have been Mockbee’s epitaph—he died in 2001) that defines the window in time he and his Rural Studio at Auburn University re-established a moral agenda for architecture, looking both backward and forward to past ambitions and future aspirations for design. This window in time will be opened wide on August 23, when the documentary film Citizen Architect: Samuel Mockbee and the Spirit of the Rural Studio premieres on PBS.

There is hope for recovery after the flood for our community but I need your participation as an AIA Member and as an Architect! I have been coordinating for the past six weeks with AIA Tennessee, AIA Louisiana and AIA National to identify experts to bring to Nashville regarding the flood recovery. Next week you have the opportunity to meet live and in person AIA member Charlotte Spencer Smith, and flood recovery experts Frank LaCourse and Mike Clark of the Baton Rouge Firm CSRS. This team is coming here to discuss flooding and to help us evaluate our situation and what we can expect for our long-term economy. We previously introduced them on May the 3rd via a national webinar and now they are coming here Thursday June 24th to teach “Maximize FEMA Funding in a Post Disaster Environment and The Architects Role Session II”. This is going to be a lecture followed by a 1-2 hour hands on workshop. All elected officials, architects, engineers, city planners and community leaders are invited to attend. AIA members are encouraged to reach out to our community leaders and bring them along. AIA is doing this at no cost to attend but sees this as a great investment in our members and in our community. It is imperative that you participate or have someone from your firm be present! We will hold this session at the Maxwell House downstairs in one of the ballrooms. The registration will open at 8:30 the session will start at 9:00 am promptly. We will provide morning coffee and Danish. Please email Patsy to reserve your spot since the space is limited to 60. If the response is strong enough we can repeat the course on Friday the 25th but I need your responses ASAP! You will receive up to 4 HSW and Sustainable Design AIA/CES Learning Units.
